Seven-year-old Christina desperately wants a dog. When she visits a kennel with her parents, she comes home with Prince, a greyhound recently retired from his champion racing career. Christina is thrilled and spends all her time with her new pal. They are like two peas in a pod. But one day, when Prince is left alone in the backyard, he escapes. Christina's mother searches everywhere for him only to find him at the schoolyard gate waiting for Christina. Promising never to leave him alone in the backyard again, her father brings home a little Chihuahua named Chancho. Now Prince will always have a companion to play with.

The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books - January 1, 2013
"The depiction of life with a beloved dog is endearing...and the short chapters (about three pages apiece) with accessible text provide a useful bridge between controlled vocabulary readers and longer chapter books as well as an effective readaloud opportunity. Each chapter sports a full-page monochromatic line and watercolor illustration, in a lively realistic style."
Kirkus Reviews - November 1, 2012
"This simple but entirely engaging short chapter book for early readers is filled with child appeal. Frequent ink illustrations...provide just the right amount of visual information to keep the pages turning. Satisfying big-dog-meets-little-girl story."
CM Magazine - October 19, 2012
"A heartwarming story about a girl and her new dog. Eric Walters writes a lighthearted, endearing tale of two parents and a child bringing home a retired racing Greyhound and making him part of their family. Detailed illustrations that help highlight the story's plot and emotion, as well as the inclusion of interesting facts about the breed of dog, add depth to a story that, in itself, is full of fun. For children learning to read chapter books, and particularly for those that enjoy reading about dogs, Prince for a Princess is definitely a good choice. Highly Recommended."
