In spring 1939, Sonia's father leaves Poland amid rising antisemitism to go to North America and find a new home where his family can live peacefully. Stranded there when the war breaks out, he will stop at nothing to reunite his family. In Nazi-occupied Poland, seventeen-year-old Sonia is equally determined, and she faces the dreaded Gestapo armed with exit visas and a precious Nicaraguan passport her father has miraculously obtained. Locked in a ghetto, witnessing atrocities and deportations, Sonia?s ominous wait for a reprieve turns desperate in the face of the mounting death toll. How will she escape her fate?
