Children’s Book Designer

Orca Book Publishers is a successful independent Canadian children’s book publisher. With 1000 active titles in print and digital formats and 100 new titles a year, we have a growing and successful publishing program. We are looking for a professional, motivated Book Designer to join our creative team. Working with the Production Department and also with Editorial and Marketing, the successful candidate will be responsible for cover and interior design, art direction of individual projects and typesetting on a full range of titles and topics as well as marketing materials. This full-time position is based in Victoria, BC.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Typesetting and layout for children’s books including picture books, illustrated nonfiction, teen and series fiction;
  • Cover design;
  • Working with artists, illustrators and photographers;
  • Creating original layouts as well as working from existing templates;
  • Design of press materials and promotional materials;
  • Development of supplementary online content for key titles;
  • Archiving paper and electronic book files;
  • Production and management of eBook files.

Qualifications

  • Keen interest and experience in the Canadian children’s book publishing industry;
  • Knowledge of current trends in design and typography;
  • Adobe Creative Cloud; InDesign; Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat, MS Office;
  • Experience in typesetting;
  • Ability to work independently with excellent time management skills;
  • Candidate must be highly efficient and organized; must enjoy working with people and other animals in an office environment.

Formal design training is required and a portfolio with relevant work samples should be submitted electronically in an email-friendly, PDF format.

Customer Service/Administrative Assistant

Orca Book Publishers is a successful independent Canadian children’s book publisher. With 1000 active titles in print and digital formats and 100 new titles a year, we have a growing and successful publishing program. We are looking for a Customer Service / Administrative Assistant to work in our busy Victoria office. This position will be responsible for customer service, general office tasks, providing support for sales, marketing and accounting as needed. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • General customer service, answering telephone;
  • Order and data entry;
  • Status reports for customers;
  • Filing
  • Opening and sorting mail and email;
  • Data entry and management;
  • Generating customer and product reports from our publishing software;
  • Maintenance of customer and prospect contact lists.

Required Skills

  • Word, Excel and other general office software;
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills;
  • Strong organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills;
  • General comfort level with new technology;
  • Ability to work independently;
  • Must like dogs and other living things, people included.
