Communications and Social Media Specialist

Orca Book Publishers is a successful independent Canadian children's book publisher. With 1000 active titles in print and digital formats and 100 new titles a year, we have a growing and successful publishing program. We are looking for a professional, motivated person to join our marketing team. This full-time position is based in Victoria, BC.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Promotion of Orca books, authors and brand online through a cohesive and organized social media and website presence on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Orca blog, website and newsletters.
  • Create and manage campaigns across several platforms, including writing online and print copy for a variety of audiences.
  • Seek out ways to optimize our views/impressions via creative content, targeted ads and industry partnerships.
  • Support our authors' social media presence and promote their events.
  • Provide regular reporting/analysis on social media metrics and create an Orca social media style guide with the marketing team.
  • Maintain the Orca blog and several regular newsletters to different stakeholders; create content, write posts, interview authors and promote on social media.
  • Craft book or campaign-specific press releases, pitches, letters, taglines and other marketing copy as needed.
  • Produce video content: author interviews, book trailers, other videos as needed.
  • Attend and assist in the execution of local Orca events.


  • Keen interest in the Canadian children's book publishing industry.
  • Background and education in Writing, Communications, English, Marketing and/or Publishing.
  • Exceptional English writing skills; ability to modify writing tone to the audience.
  • Expert knowledge of contemporary social media, especially Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest. Ability to understand the different audiences for each. Experience with social media advertising is a plus.
  • Proven leadership skills and ability to multi-task and prioritize work across many projects at once.
  • Ability to work independently, with excellent time management skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to collaborate with a team and contribute to a supportive environment.
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Adobe Acrobat, Google docs and other general office software.
  • Experience with html or email programs like Constant Contact or MailChimp is an asset. Ability to create visual content for social media and the web.
  • Candidate must be highly efficient and organized; must enjoy working with people and other animals in an office environment.
