Malone's Top Ten Books
Hello, my name is Malone. You might recognize me from the Readers section because I have my very own page there. I like to spend a lot of time at Orca so I know which books are the best. Lately I have been making a list of my favourites. I have very good taste in books, so you should read all of these ones. They all have one thing in common, and I bet you can't guess what it is.
1. Lucky's Mountain, by Dianne Maycock, 2007.
Lucky's Mountain is about a dog with only three legs. Personally, I'm glad I have four legs. But it turns out Lucky's a pretty smart dog anyway.
2. Sea Dog, by Dayle Campbell Gaetz and illustrated by Amy Meissner, 2006.
The dog in Sea Dog is very mysterious. This dog even has a secret. I admire that, because I think I would tell any secret for a biscuit. But don't tell anyone I said that, okay?
3. Puppies on Board, by Sarah N. Harvey, 2005.
There are twelve dogs in Puppies on Board which makes it twelve times better than a book without any dogs in it. That's pretty good.
4. Dog House Blues, by Jacqueline Pearce, 2005.
Usually people aren't very interesting when they don't have food to give me, but my favourite people are people who like dogs, and Dog House Blues is about a person like that, so I liked it.
5. Hank and Fergus, by Susin Neilsen Fernlund, illustrated by Louise-Andree Laliberte, 2003.
Fergus is an invisible dog. That sounds like fun. But on the other hand if nobody could see me how would they give me anything to eat? And I am very cute so it's better if you can see me, right?
6. Forward, Shakespeare!, by Jean Little, 2005.
Forward, Shakespeare! is about a seeing eye dog who is also a rescue dog (that was in the first book) and that's very impressive. Maybe we could be friends. Do you think Shakespeare can read?
7. Dog Walker, by Karen Spafford-Fitz, 2006 .
Dog Walker is about a dog walking business. That must be a great job to have because you would meet so many different dogs. In the story a boy is walking dogs to meet girls, but the dogs are more important. Right?
8. Ghost Wolf, by Karleen Bradford, illustrated by Drew Brook Cormack, 2005.
Even though wolves are not quite as good as dogs, I really liked Ghost Wolf. It was very exciting. I think if I were not a dog it would be okay to be a wolf instead.
9. Dog Days, by Becky Citra, 2003.
The main character of Dog Days doesn't like dogs but it's still a good book. If you don't like dogs maybe this book will teach you that we are pretty great after all, and that is a very important lesson.
10. A Puppy is for Loving, by Mary Labatt, 2007.
A Puppy is for Loving is a very new book about very new dogs. I am not a new dog at all but I still think puppies are very cute. Sometimes they can be annoying, though, because they bounce around so much. You know what I mean.
