Top Ten of the Month

The top ten of July 2007 were Orca's most decorated. From Before Wings with fifteen awards and honors to The Beckoners with six, these books have impressed lots of people. This tally includes awards won, awards nominated for, and lists included in—examples of lists are the CCBC's Our Choice list and the PSLA Top Forty.

1. Before Wings, by Beth Goobie, 2001.
Before Wings has won the CLA Book of the Year for Young Adults Award, the Mr. Christie's Book Award Silver Seal, and the Saskatchewan Book Award for Children's Literature. It has been nominated for nine other awards, and appeared on three selected lists. That's fifteen listings, nominations, and wins! Before Wings is a teen novel.

2. Alone at Ninety Foot, by Katherine Holubitsky, 2001.
Alone at Ninety Foot has won the CLA Book of the Year for Young Adults Award and the IODE Violet Downey Book Award. Additionally, it has been nominated for seven awards, and appeared on five select lists. That's fourteen honors in total. Alone at Ninety Foot is a teen novel.

3. War of the Eagles, by Eric Walters, 1998.
War of the Eagles won the Ruth Schwartz Children's Book Award. It was also nominated for six other awards and featured on four lists, making a total of eleven. War of the Eagles is a teen novel.

4. Quid Pro Quo, by Vicki Grant, 2005.
Quid Pro Quo won the Arthur Ellis Crime Writers Award in 2006. It has been short- or long-listed for six other awards, and appeared on three lists, for a total of 10 honors in the last two years. Quid Pro Quo is a juvenile novel.

5. Solomon's Tree, by Andrea Spalding, 2005.
Solomon's Tree won the First Nations Communities Read Award, was nominated for four other awards, and featured on three lists. Solomon's Tree is a picture book.

6. The Tuesday Cafe, by Don Trembath, 1996.
Tuesday Cafe won the Ross R. Annett Award for Children's Literature (an Alberta Book Award), and was nominated for four other awards. It also appeared on three lists. Tuesday Cafe is a teen novel.

7. TJ and the Cats, by Hazel Hutchins, 2002.
TJ and the Cats won the Saskatchewan Young Readers' Choice Shining Willow Award, was on three lists, and was nominated for three other awards. TJ and the Cats is part of the Orca Young Readers series.

8. Hero, by martha attema, 2003.
Hero won the Ontario Elementary Teachers' Federation Writers Award, was nominated for four other awards, and appeared on two lists. Hero is part of the Orca Young Readers series.

9. The Beckoners, by Carrie Mac, 2004.
The Beckoners won the Arthur Ellis Crime Writers Best Juvenile Award and the Stellar Book Award. It was nominated for one other award and appeared on three lists. The Beckoners is a teen novel.

10. Waiting for Sarah, by Bruce Mcbay, 2003.
Waiting for Sarah won the Manitoba Young Readers' Choice Award, was the runner-up for the Red Maple Award, and appeared on three lists. It was also short-listed for one other award. Waiting for Sarah is a teen novel.
