Coat of Arms

This project is adapted from The Freedom Writers Diary—Teacher's Guide by Erin Gruwell. Instead of making a coat of arms for themselves, students make it about a book character.

Directions:

1. Cut out a Coat of Arms template on poster board.

2.Divide into four sections/boxes.

3. Box 1: Goals of character in the book. This box represents the goals of the character. These can include personal, school, career or family-related goals.

4. Box 2: Favorite Things of character in book. This is a place for the character’s favorite things, such as sports, pets, hobbies, entertainers, etc.

5. Box 3: Someone the character admires. Draw or paste in a picture of someone that the character in the book admires.

6. Box 4: What makes the character unique. Use words, pictures or drawings to show the rest of the class what makes the character unique.

7. Center of Poster: Either draw a picture or glue a photo of what you think the character of the book looks like. Or glue the front cover of the book in the middle.
