Character Letter

1. Choose two characters from a selected book. Write a letter from one character to another.

2. Express how you feel about a problem that took place in the book.

3. Make the letter sound realistic.

Example: Sticks and Stones by Beth Goobie

Write a letter from the character Jujube's point of view. Jujube expressed her feelings to Brent over a nasty rumor that he spread at school.

Dear Brent,

I'm writing you this letter because you need to know how much your words have hurt me. First of all, I was so happy when we went to the dance. I thought you were so good looking and I believed you were a person with ingegrity.

My mom always told me to trust my instincts and when we were in your car, my gut feeling told me that you weren't the guy that I thought you were. You moved way too fast. I felt uncomfortable when you kept pawing me all over. I felt like a thing instead of a girl with feelings.

When I went to school the following Monday, I couldn't believe my ears or eyes. You had told all of your buddies that we had gone all the way. The rumor spread like wild fire and even though it wasn't true, the words nearly ruined my reputation. Once words are out, you can't take them back. Some people will always believe the crazy rumors no matter what.

I was called "slut," "backseat baby," "fast," "easy," and even told that I would go all the way on the first date, that I would do anythign that a guy wanted, and even my name was posted all over the boy's bathroom saying, "for a good time, call Jujube Gelb." All because of your lies.

I cried and cried. I didn't want to come to school anymore. Everywhere I went, I heard kids whispering about me a felt their stares on my back. The laughter. The jokes. I hated myself for no reason. Just because of your words.

Brent, I don't know if you have any sisters, but how would you like it if one of your sisters were treated the way you treated me? Would you care if some boy tried to move too fast in the back seat of his car with your sister? Would you care if some boy lied and told all of his friends that his date (your sister) went all the way with him? Would you care if your sister was laughed at and teased and had her name slandered all over the bathroom walls? Somehow, I don't think you would want this for your sister.

The fact of the matter is that you can never take your words back. Your allegations regarding my morals will always be out there. My reputation will always be ruined to those fools that believe that I slept with you in the back of your car. I can honestly say that I hate your hurtful words.

However, I believe in karma. I believe that one day Brent, the lies you spread will catch up to you. Maybe some girl's big brother will beat you up. Maybe some parent will call you on it and when they tell your parent what you did, it will shatter your "good son" image. Or worse yet, maybe the same thing will happen to your sister or who knows, your daughter someday. When it catches up to you, I hope you will bend over backwards to make sure that it never happens again.

There are plenty of fish in the sea. Disgusting pond scum like you will never rise to the top. No. Instead, you will live a lonely life watching happy couples experience mutual love and respect – something that will be out of your reach.

Sincerly,

Jujube Gelb
